Pearl, originally titled Nácar, comes from a particularly productive period in Harrison’s career. The title refers to the lustrous inner world of the pearl oyster, an appropriate metaphor for a story built around beauty, desire and the hidden lives of its characters.

The narrative is set in Mother-of-Pearl Resort in ‘a banana republic’ where rich Americans take full advantage of penniless young local women. Pearl, the main protagonist of the storyline and a pearl fisher, turns up in the world of artist Byron Kerr, who is just as rampantly and consistently horny as she seems to be. But Pearl disappears from Byron’s life as mysteriously as she arrived, and it seems that she has a habit of turning up whenever Byron is involved in a new love interest, creating plenty of scope for exciting threesomes.

Pearl has an intimate relationship with water and the sea, which may help to explain her strange behaviour, but then there is also an actual pearl, courtesy of American millionaire Olaf, who in his turn finds Pearl completely irresistible, and the story ends with yet another threesome involving Pearl, Olaf, and his chauffeur.

Pearl was serialised in Kiss Comix, and subsequently published in French by La Cúpula in their La Poudre aux Rêves series, and in English by Last Gasp in 2003.
