Send in Your Coupon, originally Llena tu Cupón, is one of Harrison’s more overtly comic stories, built around the seductive promises of advertising. Its starting point is a familiar fantasy – send away a coupon and your life will be transformed. In Harrison’s version, the prize is a career in art, complete with money, luxury, admiration and an enviable lifestyle.
The advertisement promises everything at once – deluxe cars, exotic holidays and social prestige – while presenting artistic success as something that can be obtained almost effortlessly. The central joke lies in the gulf between this glossy fantasy and the reality of learning to draw. Harrison takes the language of mail-order courses and career advertising and pushes it into absurd territory, turning the desire for artistic success into an erotic comic fantasy.
The story is particularly appropriate for Harrison, because it plays with the world in which he worked. Advertising, illustration, publishing and erotic comics overlap until it becomes difficult to tell where genuine artistic aspiration ends and commercial fantasy begins. The result is a satirical exploration of the elusive promise that there are easy routes to success.
Llena tu Cupón was serialised in Kiss Comix No. 78, published by Ediciones La Cúpula. It was subsequently published in French by La Cúpula in their La Poudre aux Rêves series, and in English by Last Gasp.
